Produced in Brooklyn, Nilsson transferred to Los Angeles for a teen to escape his family's bad financial situation. While employed as a computer programmer in a financial institution, he grew interested in musical composition along with close-harmony singing, and has been successful in getting a number of his songs recorded by several artists like that the Monkees. Back in 1967, he debuted on RCA Victor using all the LP Pandemonium Shadow Show, followed closely by Many Different releases that include a cooperation with Randy Newman (Nilsson Sings Newman, 1970) along with the first children's narrative The Point! His most commercially successful record, Nilsson Schmilsson (1971), made the global top 10 singles"Without You" and"Coconut". His other top 10 hit,"Everyone's Talkin'" (1968), was a dominant tune in the 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy. A variant of Nilsson's"One", published by Three Dog Night in 1969, also attained the U.S. top 10
